Separation

The soft cat's ears the moon had
that night looked angular and alert
and as the stars unwound themselves
with clattering rapidity, like cherry blossoms
that would not whisper, but would be heard,
I strew the sky with you and I
and smiled into that purple bell
and waited for a while, for my wishes
to return along the path that I had set.
But nothing was due but dew, and until
it settled cold and wet like little clouds
upon the curling blades I would not stoop
to sleep, and now I wait, and now I dream,
of all the million miles, lying in between.
