I just read Lolita for the first time--Nabokov is a genius, and Lolita is by far, one of my favorite novels.
Any comments on why you loved or hated the book?
Thanks!

Hi Nabaokov, and welcome. You will probably get more responses to this thread if you post this in the General Literature section of the forum.
I've read most of Lolita; I still need to finish the last forty or so pages. I thought I would like it better. I struggle with some literature like that because I am, in general, led by my feelings, and it was difficult for me to feel engaged with the characters. Except for Lolita, and I just wanted her to get to have a life, and she didn't. And I couldn't forget that he was ruining hers. So while I know there was more to it than that, that all kind of stopped me cold.
This book is fascinating and hardly have I come across anyone taking a disliking to this one and in fact it has a beauty, an artistic, stylistic beauty not with a thematic compromise. He is a genus, and indeed a great writer though originally Russian and he is so candidly direct and straight and he could do justice to writing and his readers always feel indebted to him

I think that appreciating good literature is about expressing your feelings. I do agree though, Dolores Haze was given a very poor upbringing, and deserved better. Her name, dolores, means pain and suffering. I would suggest you push through if you find yourself unable to finish the story, you are almost done! It is suppose to be one of the greatest novels of the 20th century, and now you can say you read it. Thanks for the reply, and also for letting me know I posted in the wrong section. :D
