Hi! I'm new to the forum but hope your collective brain power and memory will be able to help me...
When I was at secondary school in England in the late 1960s/early 70s we had a set book in English classes which was a collection of short stories. Each story invariably started with a traveller arriving at a country inn. Here he was regaled by some old rustic sitting outside the pub who, for the price of a pint, would tell him a story. I really enjoyed these tales but I have no recollection of the author or the title of the book. Can anyone help please as I'd love to track the book down - if it's still in print! Many thanks.

Sounds like The Canterbury Tales...

Thanks for that, but it definitely wasn't TCT, we studied that as well and these stories I'm trying to find were all in reasonably modern English. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Guy de Maupassant did a lot of short stories. Could be him.
