the expression:
''selling like hot cakes''
makes think this: Do we ever buy eat hot cakes?
Does hot cake exist? If not are we more and more talking ourselves out of sense for the sake of expressions?

It's an old expression from a time when people sold 'hot cakes' on the streets in the winter (presumably in busy towns where there was a passing trade). One assumes they would have been popular, so sold in great numbers and in a short space of time.
It's a bit like 'putting the cart before the horse' - hardly anyone travels by horse and cart nowadays yet the expression still makes sense.

Making sense is so boring! We need to talk more nonsense! Don't you think conversations that make absolutely no sense at all are the most interesting ones?

Take for example a homeless person having an irrational conversation with themselves. (It's such a shame that society doesn't take better care of such people.) But at any rate isn't it more interesting to listen to the homeless person rant and rave irrational tirades, than it is listening to to "normal people" talk about the weather?

More nonsense in literature is definitely the answer!

I agree up to a certain point.
Sense is logic and logic is happiness.
A homeless person is tragic and so listening to them talk would make more sense then listening to the weather forecast.

cacian... what are you smoking when you come up with these inane questions? Do "hot cakes" exist? I hope so... I'll be having them for breakfast this morning along with my bacon and eggs.

You have hot cakes for breakfast? What kind of hot cake is this? I only have or buy cold cakes and even when I bake a cake I wait for it to cool before I can eat it.

I assume that's the excuse you use for posting so many inane replies on these threads. They're interesting.

"Hotcakes" AKA Pancakes are a common staple of breakfast in the US... served with Maple Syrup or fresh fruit.

I literally just spat out a mouthful of tea on reading that.

The 'correct way one would rub themselves'? Good grief, the mind boggles...

This is usually said similarly to "that rubbed me the wrong way", and indicates irritation or annoyance. I assume it refers to the way petting an animal the wrong way, i.e. against the fur rather than with it, feels uncomfortable to them.
