Hey, I just stumbled across this site while browsing the internet last night out of boredom - and I love it! It's so hard to find other literature dorks (and I mean that in the best possible way) and so it's great to be able to share my bookworm inclinations with kindred spirits.
I'm a Sri Lankan studying literature in India at an undergraduate level - tried everything else before this (because being a 'writer' isn't a 'viable' career according to most people), from architecture to psychology to journalism. But I just ended up coming back to what I've always loved - books. I'd like to know if it's as challenging outside South Asia as it is over here - to just up and decide you want to be a WRITER? Do you face cultural, social or financial challenges? I feel like there's a need for support from a solid industry for writers to climb into (like the monarchical support in 16th century England) - without us having to do part time jobs or branch into technically-not-literary-writing jobs like advertising and journalism to pay the bills.
