Is a book the ultimate goal for a writer? or is every writer expected to produce a book?
I feel there maybe more to a writer then writing towards making a publishing a book.
I find the idea of being pressed against the clock to produce a book rather then write time consuming and distracting from the reasons why one write.

I think the ultimate goal of a writer is or should be - to live in the world that he creates in his mind, to play God in creating something that will stay forever, to travel places in your mind where none had traveled to before. To put something into the lives of others by his books, stories, character, lifestyle, etc. These are all my goals as a writer.
