Hello, all. I look forward to learning more about your activities and interests. I am excited to learn of this site but I'm not sure yet exactly what I can contribute. To that end, may I proffer a statement that my mentor, Andrew Lytle (longtime editor of The Sewanee Review[I]), made to me regarding literary criticism? [I]Literary criticism is the attempt to recreate what the author created but to do so in critical terms.
At the moment my major pressing interest is in gaining a deeper understanding of Turgenev's "Country Doctor." If anyone can help me or lead me to serious treatments of it, I would be most grateful. (My health makes it difficult to go to a university library and do the basic research through the indexes that would lead me to pertinent articles, essays, and analyses.)
