dark desire

I had Swift and Gogol in different courses in last semester. In December I am going to give another run to the two. I want to know the authors, their works, their reception, criticism and how they are seen standing in the 21st century. A Tale of a Tub and Dead Souls (Part 1) were in the syllabus. Gulliver Travels by Swift and Tarus Bulba, Overcoat and short stories by Gogol are what I have planned to read. What biographical material, critical material should I read? Right now I can think of nothing further than Cambridge companions. How are the Cambridge companions?
At large, I am interested in satirical works. I want to write as well. If you feel like sharing your experience of reading Swift/Gogol, please do.
