I think that the song "As long as he needs me" depicts Nancy as a hopeless case, which of course she admits in the book. She may appear the life of the party when she's dancing and singing in the film, but she is hiding a very frightened person deep down.
I don't think that she has any respect for Bill Sykes, she is relying on the fact that he is all she has got in life and that she couldn't possibly strike out on her own and ditch her lowley, unpleasant existance. The song is her excuse to stay, as long as he needs me indeed.
Isn't it the case that in todays society, woman who are battered stay in the scene because of fear, or more to the point, fear of what may happen if they dare to go it alone. In this case i suppose it's "better the devil you know". Nancy does do the right thing in the end, saving poor Oliver, but at what cost! She has so little self worth because of her circumstances and even turns down the feedom offered to her, she really is acting the true victim and doesn't she just love it deep down!
