Hi,

I'm currently doing A-level coursework and I'm looking for some poetry recommendations. My essay title is based around 'the search for a spiritual identity' and so far I've chosen two texts (The Brothers Karamazov and either Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man or Franny and Zooey by Salinger). It's compulsory to include one poetry collection in addition to these texts and, as only one can be in translation, the poetry needs to have been written in English. So basically I'm looking for poetry that is appropriate to the theme of my essay and that will facilitate comparisons with the novels I've mentioned. I'm considering Gerard Manley Hopkins, John Milton, T.S. Eliot and Wallace Stevens, but I'd be really grateful for any suggestions. Thanks.

What about John Donne? Taking the two halves of Donne (the Metaphysical poet, and the religious poet) might be an interesting comparison to the different views presented in Karamzov.

Have you considered Milton's magnificent play-like poem, Samson Agonistes, the tortured story of a young man?
