View Full Version : A Matter of Pain

They promised everything,
they swore to God above
that they would do this or that.
Just relieve the pain, please.
I'll pay any price you ask,
just relieve the pain.

My grandmother had no one but me
to care for her. She promised me
that she would remember me in her will.
She didn't.

My mother had no one but me
to care for her. She promised me
thousands of dollars after one of her bouts
with pain. She didn't pay up.

I've taken care of a dozen relatives or more
who promised me the sky and more
if I would take care of them
and relieve their pain.
None of them understood
or realized that I did it
out of compassion. I wanted
to relieve their pain. That's all.
But most of them were caught
in the American dream
that you get nothing for free.
So they felt obligated
to tell me I would be rewarded.
But they never paid up.

It was beyond their comprehension
that I was willing to relieve their pain
for free; that I did it out of compassion.
All of them believed there was a price
to be paid for caring; a price
that once the pain was relieved
they felt no obligation to pay.

They were all liars.
But then, pain will make you say anything.

“I disagree about his poetry,” the girl said. “It is true that he is somewhat didactic, but the didacticism in his poetry lends itself to the message he's trying to convey.”

The ending was what did it for me.
