I have just been assigned to write a paper (roughly 10 pages) comparing and contrasting a classical treatment of a Greek myth with a modern (c.1600-1960s) treatment. The modern work is supposed to be a recasting or retelling of the myth; it may not merely allude to the myth. The work is supposed to be a "substantial" length, which my professor identified as roughly the length of a play or more.
I have come up with this small list so far:
Shelley, Orpheus
Edward Dowden, Euridyce
Richard Watson Dixon, Orpheus
Racine, Andromache
Racine, Iphigenia
Racine, Phedre
Shelley, Prometheus Unbound
Tennyson, Tithonus
Tennyson, Ulysses
Keats, The Fall of Hyperion
Voltaire, Oedipus
I would like to have a larger pool to choose from, so I would appreciate advice/guidance. I also would love to escape the tragic love story theme; Shelley's Fall of Hyperion is very intriguing, as it avoids the tragic love triangle genre in favor of a more philosophical discussion of truth and knowledge. Anything down that route would be far more appreciated than another tragic love story!
Thank you!
