Flags Of Our Fathers is a true story based on the flag raising of Iwo Jima. The battle of Iwo Jima was a very significant battle during WWII. One important moment of the battle is what this book is about. The Americans needed to conquer Mt. Suribachi to gain pretty much total control over the Japnese island. When the troops reached the top of the massive mountain, 6 men raised an American Flag, claiming the territory. The flag was raised on the 5th day of the battle, but the battle still went on for 30 or so more. Three of the six flag raisers died in battle after raising that flag. The men who died were Harlon Block, Michael Strank, and Franklin Sousley. The Men who made it out alive were John "Doc" Bradley, Ira Hayes, and Rene Gagnon. These men returned to the states as heroes because the picture of them raising the flag atop Mt. Suribachi was now an icon. This picture gave the Americans hope. Flags Of Our Fathers is probably one of my favorite books of all time. It is inspirational and i suggest this book to anybody that is interested in war books.

I agree. Even if later on we decided not to use it for invasion, it was a most important military position. Excellent post.
