New to reading so decided to start with American Psycho (one of my favorite films) and loved the book more than the film. Was recommended Lunar Park, which I'm halfway through now and enjoying it.

I'm looking for my next read so I can start as soon as I finish Lunar Park.

I'm looking for something that holds onto any of these:
- narcissistic alpha male type
- quite disturbing in anyway
- drug use

I was gonna pick up Requiem for a Dream or Trainspotting (also some of my favorite films), but I'd prefer my next read to be something I've not seen the movie adaptation.

Any ideas?

I only saw the film.

None-the-less, I dig horror/thriller:

Koko, an old book of big fame by Peter Straub

Don't know of any King or Barker directly dealing with a serial killer outside of the classic The Shining, come to think of it Gerald's Game has a serial killer, also quite morbid? But there is much deviance in Barker, I'd recommend 'In The Flesh' and 'The Inhuman Condition'

I know Alban Berg's opera Lulu has an appearence of Jack The Ripper, probably some good hist-fictions on him as well as other such.

All I can think of now, sorry...

Some films if you dig them:

Surveillance by David Lynch's daughter
Maniac 1980 and its remake

Ok, just read the last part of the post. As far as dope/ego-maniacs:

ego, The Fall, Camus
ego, Noted from the Underground, Dostoevsky
ego, Cosmopolis, DeLillo (so so much like American Pyscho)

Films:
Shame 2011 dope/ego, Wall Street 1987 ego, Bad Lieutenant/1992 dope

Isn't The Talented Mr Ripley about a sociopath?

how about Crash by J G Ballard or Naked Lunch by William Burroughs.
maybe the great classic Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, although it is not explicit in the same way as American Psycho for example.

ugh, i hated American Psycho so much, hahahahaha.

How about Bitter Moon by Polanski or even Eyes Wide Shut.
These two films have some real weirdness in them.
Then there is [I]Train Spotting British film noir By Danny Boyle book Irvin Walsh. There are some very disturbing scenes in it.

You can try 'A Clockwork Orange' if you haven't seen the film yet.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame doesn't have any of your characteristics but it's incredibly disturbing.

A Clockwork Orange was a good suggestion. Isn't Fight Club meant to be good?
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?

I noticed someone already mentioned A Clockwork Orange which is the first thing I thought of.

Also The Possessed(Also known as Demons, or The Devils) by Dostoyevsky

There is novel very well known in some circles, loosely like a Oblimov/Underground written not too long after, though far more taboo and risque, maybe French, maybe???

What is this Called?
