I've not read many books on biking to be honest, I've just got there through trial and error (mostly error). In the past I have had mountain bikes and road bikes, but now I have found the happy medium of the hybrid. I still have a soft spot for road bikes though. What sort of bike have you got?

The best fiction book about cycling is The Rider by Tim Krabbe. It is about a amateur but seriously taken cycle race that takes place in France in the 70s. The narrator's mind wanders during the race back over his life and his cycling heroes. In between, he describes the race in which he's taking part, almost in real time.

There are some good non-fictional books about cycling. My favourite was Rough Ride by Paul Kimmidge. He was a professional cyclist during the 80s who became a sports reporter. He wasn't an especially successful cyclist, partly because he wouldn't take performance enhancing drugs, which in those days mainly meant amphetamines.

Sorry, I'm of no help on this topic, but now I've got Queen's bicycle song stuck in my head!

Richard's New Bicycle Book by Richard Ballantine - lots of technical & repair advice mixed with ranting against cars...
Bicycles keep popping up in H.G. Wells, especially, "The Wheels of Chance", about a cycling holiday, somewhat in the style of Three Men in a Boat. His Time Machine is oddly like a bicycle, with a saddle that the rider straddles and controls like handlebars.
Like Neely, I have a hybrid - a happy medium. No Time Machine :(
"When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race." ~H.G. Wells
