View Full Version : Considering "going eBook", but I have so many!

(Pardon the briefness of my post; I'm in a hurry and didn't want to forget to write this!)

For so many reasons, I prefer hard-copy books. The feel, the smell, what-have-you. But having so many is hurting my ability to move for job opportunities; so many books take up so much room, and that equates to shipping, extra trips, or donating them at the last minute to make room.

I want to keep my actual unit-related books, and store some of my "classroom" books, but what about the rest? I always feel rotten donating them to a Goodwill, where they often get destroyed or even just sit there.

I've taken to doing PaperBackSwap, but that doesn't do much for me right now; gives me more points to "buy" books with. Half.com is helpful, albeit slow; after listing fifty books, it might be a month before I sell two of them.

I've taken to buying/borrowing eBooks on my iPad lately, and it seems to be all right with me, since I can take the device with me pretty much anywhere (and I often do, since I have most of my other things on it, as well). So, I'm thinking of going that route with a lot of the books that I simply read for enjoyment, for the time being.

What are some ideas that you all might have for selling my books, or donating them to a place (libraries, but the one here doesn't take some books that I have, it seems; not that they're inappropriate) where they'd be appreciated? Is there possibly such a thing as a sort of exchange for hard-copy to eBook, or discount plan of some kind for "selling books back" to somebody?

I realize it's a bit of an odd question/scenario, but it's been a curiosity of mine for, well, months! Please share your ideas!

There's always eBay or Amazon.

Not as odd as you would think. I moved twice in a six month period four years ago. It was a nightmare. I have 2 readers and keep many books on there along with a computer backups but I still have several hundred hardback and paperbacks. Book are heavy delicate and awkward. Unfotunately, so far, I've never heard of an exchange program but I think it has to be inevitable. As more media becomes only digital, physical books for collectors and throwbacks like myself will become a scarce commodity. I could see somebody hitting on that sometime in the near future.
