Or are they just something the media and books have created to keep our interest in gadgets movies and stories fixated.
I personally think there is no such a thing as a heroe but more just a person being considerate helpful and thoughteful which is what nature intended for humans and that to behave in gentemanlylike manner.

You know who's a real hero- Hiro from "Heroes" - that's a real Hero.
Also, When Han Solo returns to the Death Star in the Millennium Falcon, and shoots down the TIE fighters and saves the Rebel cause, do you think he does so to be a hero. I don't think so.
Good question though.

Oh I thought for a minute you meant Hiro from Hero of the Rails. A japanese engine introduce in Thomas the Tank Engine haha.
''Thomas, my friend. You must not worry. My welcome present is right here. Being here with my friends is the biggest present of all, and the most special present from Sodor, there is nothing more special!" — Hiro at his welcome party, The Biggest Present of All, thirteenth season.
I have just looked it up as I have never heard of him before this.

Oh so why did/does he do it? I thought heroism was the idea.
Good question though.
Hey thanks

I think Han (with his trusty sidekick Chewie) cared about the rebel cause. Plus Han wanted to @$#@ Princess Leia - and he did. So it is complex.

It is all down to the rebel cause.
I guess a rebel is is more of antihero like the antichrist and Jesus being the hero.
Are you suggesting princess Leia and him getting together was because of his cause. That Leia only took shine to him because of what he did and not because of what he was?

Do heroes exist?
<-- points to himself
Also, Han Solo is a hero. Getting to **** Princess Leia is just a side-effect of being awesome.

Are we talking about the heroes depicted in films and books or at real-life heroes that were made to be these heroes by modern-day media?

Well in that case. Modern-day media are very much responsible for our heroes nowadays. That makes sense because a lot of things (I dare say, most) we know these days are due to media. Whether it's the weather, international news, local news, social networks, all of these things are elements of the modern-media machine. This machine has pros, because connectivity and information are in most cases viewed as positive. It has cons as well, since we are slightly losing our own judgement. The media we consume is easily manipulated. This manipulation is among others manifested in the forming of so called heroes. These people have done something to help a fellow-citizen and the media picks up on this as being an interesting topic. This is of course because we all like to see this sort of people on tv.
Because these people are put in the news so positively our image of that particular person will also be positive. This is a good thing in my opinion, because they most of the time did do something admirable. But the media does have the tendency to blow things out of proportion. And that is the part I have trouble with. Everything is always so extremely blown out of proportion. It's like nowadays rescuing a cat will make you the next Mother Theresa (this is itself exaggerated, but what the hell).

I'm not sure there are heros, but there are definitely heroic acts. I love me some Han Solo but was he a hero? He was a smuggler and I don't care what anybody says or what the movies depict now, Han shot first. He definitely performed some heroic acts though.
On the other hand, knowing that he was striving to do good is heroic right? even if he doesn't meet that goal all the time?

Sure Han Solo was a mercenary, but he had a change of heart which made him a hero. Then again Han Solo may have done all this just to impress Princess Leia. It's the source of a million pub and dinner arguments:p
R2D2 was pretty heroic!
C3PO - only history can be the judge.
Obi- Wan Kenobi best qualifies as a hero, due to his sacrifice.
