Little dog...

My lucky gift;
The day you arrived on my door,
in my friend's arms,
peeking eyes and
slanted paws -
I've been frightened.
By you,
for you.
Your size,
excitement,
persona,
potential.
Potty training;
pleasing you,
pleasing me.
Sensitive to;
your trembling frame,
your reddened eyes,
your little jaw,
your life.
You are so much more
than a pretty thing on leash,
for the public
and frivolity,
suddenly familiar strangers,
or envious firm friends.
You are living
breathing,
growing, wanting,
needing
of nurture.
Looking up to me,
to give -
to teach,
to entertain.

And it's a terrifying thing...
little dog.
