Hi guys I've been looking high and low for this and I can't find it! If anyone know please tell me the title!

It is by a russian author of the pushkin generation, I can't remember which one it was.

The story is about a young man who fell in love with a prostitute. The prostitute did not reciprocate his love. There was a scene of him becoming drunk and dressed in fancy clothes to win her over. He then invited her to his apartment on the pretext that it was his birthday. He tried to kiss her and she ran downstairs. As she was running down she heard him shoot himself.

It's typical tragic russian stuff. I flipped through my selection of chekhov and pushkin short stories but I still can't find it. If anyone know of this story I would be sooo grateful!

Thanks!
