My brother was affected by this. Too many years of hard drinking and lack of vitamin B1 - thiamine -- got to his brain.

I called 911 on August 10th. I've been crying almost every day since. It's hard stuff. He will be affected forever. He was a brilliant mathematician at McGill University in Canada. Now he barely knows what day it is or where he is. He is still smart, just lost, and the look in his eyes tells a story.

It's a common yet under-diagnosed problem.

Wow, I am really sorry to hear you are going through this.
My dad was an alcoholic, although it was cancer that took him in the end, drinking had a huge impact on his brain functions. Maybe he even had this same syndrome. I will never know now.
Seeing someone you love deteriorate is just horrible all you can do is be there for them. But now and again, they will have good days and the real them shines through.

I know its corny but I am sending you a hug, I know you need it.

It can be treated, but it must be done quickly. Is he seeing someone for this? Is he in some kind of treatment for his drinking?

I am sorry, jajdude, for him, to have altered the course of his life in such a manner, and for you, to have in a way, lost your brother as you knew him.
