View Full Version : Where is the most appropriate place to start a discussion about a specific author?

I've just tackled this board head on for a day and only now I'm looking about me.

I started a thread on Sterne in the "General Lit" board, as that was the first one on the screen and there seemed similar threads there.

Looking down the screen I see the "Discussion on Specific Author" boards.

I suppose I've answered my own question. Discussion of specific authors should go under "Discussion of Specific Authors".

I hope I haven't broken the off side rule by using the "Gen Lit" board.

I can imagine that a thread has a much greater chance of coming to members' attention in "Gen Lit". If I score a try in "Specific Authors" can there be a conversion to "Gen Lit"?

What do you mean??

There are two places where there are threads on particular books, "General Reading" and "Discussion on Specific Authors" with sub-boards on everyone out of copyright from Adams, Andy to Zola, Emile.

The logical place to put such a thread is under the specific author. However in that case it is likely not to be taken up, since only the last post for all the authors appears on the home screen.

A lot of such discussions have appeared under "General Reading". If I start a thread there on, say, Tristram Shandy, rather than under the Sterne sub-board, is that unacceptable to the administrators? Will it be moved?

ruggerlad, it should be in General Literature, so, no issue with what you've done.

The specific author forums are designated only to correspond with the respective authors of the etexts in this area http://www.online-literature.com/author_index.php of the site.

Welcome to LitNet :)

Thanks for the reassurance, logos. A lad doesn't want to upset the ref when there's a scrumdown.

But if Sterne was among the Specific Authors (and I swear I found him there but he's not there now that I can see) I should have posted him there?

It is easier to keep track of replies to threads under General Discussion, but I want to keep to house rules.

Unfortunately Laurence Sterne is not yet on the site, although will be an excellent addition; they're on the list of new authors to be added in the future:)

To keep track of a thread, you can always click on Thread Tools link (right hand near the top of page) and Subscribe to that thread.

Ta.

I'm finding my way around and hadn't understood the "subscribe to thread" bit. A site where I've posted a lot had a nice "Replies to posts you've made" button which I'd got used to.

Brain getting into gear in the morning. The problem for me is that someone may start a thread in the "Specific Authors" section which I would be interested in looking at. I will only be aware that it exists when it appears under "New Threads" where it only appears for a limited time (as long as I'm online?)

It will also appear on the main screen to the right of the main column, but only so long as nobody has posted another post on one of the umpteen specific authors there. :mad2:
