Friday in June

The office-windows are wide open
The light subdued behind the blinds
The air has halted with a crystal smell to it
A helicopter flap-flap-flaps across the sapphire vault
School-children are shrieking with glee
To the sound of the ‘Macarena’ wafting in
To the June-warmth rippling our vision
To the lawn-mower’s song in the distance
It’s Friday, it’s June, with a perfume of holidays

I think the helicopter line is my favourite: don't they just! Great description.

and 'the lawnmower's song' so evocative of summer... well worth digging up from the vaults.

Hi Dieter, thanks for joining in!
Every summer I wait to hear, 'Summertime' by DJ JazzyJeff and the Fresh Prince as this is the most summery of summer songs.

Your poem did the same job. It transferred me for a minute from this dank english morning. I love it. So many evocative summer images.

Thanks, Jerrybaldy. My favourite summer song is the Gershwin-tune "Summertime", in the Morcheeba version. Slow-mo trickling of notes and a warm & sexy female voice. Btw, this is not the poem I consider my best (I couldn't make that joice - what father would I be if I preferred one of my kids, huh?), but it was the one I re-read with the most acute nostalgia - Indian summer here in Paris is bloody freezin' as well, even had to rummage through my belongings to find the little electric heater as they haven't switched on the central heating yet. Where has that nice summer gone to, darn oh darn? Best to you, wrap yourself in warm clothes like I do! We wouldn't want you to catch a cold, now, would we?

I love "a perfume of holidays", very interesting, and quite wondrous.
