These are the "national epics" of France and Spain, respectively. The elements they share are many: hero battles seemingly unbeatable odds, the hero's horse and sword take on almost human characteristics, romantic love certainly takes a back seat, death is romanticized.

In translation, neither would take you more than an hour or so to read :D .
