lit contests

Anyone here regularly taking part in lit contests?
I sent work to three up to now. In the first i got 16th place. In the second i think i did not do good at all, and now waiting for the results of the third.
Good thing about this third one is that the top 20 stories will be published in a small tome, so my own might be in there too, with some luck... Although they did place an awful restriction, giving 11 random words that should be in the story, which made it harder for me to produce something i like :)

Another positive is that some fairly known local writers are the judges, so if i do well it might open some more doors for me.

I submitted a poem to a "competition" once (in the hazy past when I wrote poetry). It was more a scam than a competition. Just about everything got in and they made money selling you the book of garbage with your own work included.

It sounds like you're competing in something more legit. Good luck! No matter how it turns out you'll have gained by the experience.

Sad to hear about your experience. Yes, many lit contests are scams, particularly if they ask you to pay to enter. I never write for those that ask money, nor for anything of dubious worth.
I might even turn out to not buy the book even if my story is in it, i am mostly interested in being read by some of the judges who are big names here. Also the publishing house is big, and it won't hurt me to be related to them even in an epidermic way :)
