In the anthology Albatross Book of Verse I read a poem of Elizabeth Bishop. 'The Fish' (http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-fish/). It's good, there is something about it that I liked, the style maybe.

Anyone here read her? Is she good?
Any suggestion on poems/books? (Including prose)

Bishop is amongst my favourite poets.

I have Compete Poems: 1927-1979, which is the updated version of the National Book Award winning Complete Poems. There are a couple unpublished poems that have surfaced in a recent 2006 edition, but I'm not sure they're worth digging up unless you're obsessed with Bishop. My only complaint with the book is the hideous pink cover.

She didn't write fiction if you're looking for prose work. She wrote some critical stuff on Brazilian poetry, and had extensive correspondences with other poets and academics. I wouldn't say it's worth reading unless you're interested in her general ideas about poetry.

As a poet she bridges the popular Confessional style of the 50s-60s (think Robert Lowell and Sylvia Plath) with the more structured poetics of High Modernists like Marianne Moore. Lowell was a teacher of hers; Moore was a friend and early editor of her work. I think "The Fish" is one of her best poems too. You need to read "The Man-Moth," "The Map," and "In The Waiting Room."

Thanks a lot, I'll read the poems online then I'll let you know what i think.
I will look after the other poets also, I just read that TS Eliot liked Marianne Moore, that's a good sign.

One Art is another very famous poem by her. You might read that. Also, 'The Shampoo' is wonderful.

And her Sestina is endlessly anthologized being amongst the few in modern English.

I read all the poems. She is very good and she has a very recognizable style. I liked especially 'The Man-Moth' and 'The Shampoo'
