Can you suggest short literary works (short stories, novellas, and short poems; no novels or long poems, please) that deal with scientists (including physicians, engineers, and mathematicians) and with what they do? Not works that involve science, as in most of what passes for science fiction, but about scientists and/or about the process, method, ethics, results, etc. of science.

Examples:
- Chamisso, Peter Schlemihl
- Hawthorne, Dr. Heidegger's Experiment
- Hawthorne, The Birthmark
- Poe, A Sonnet--to Science

Thank you, I've never heard of it. I'll give it a try.

I don't remember Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut being that long. It is only partially about a scientist.

Maybe you could try Stephenson's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It doesn't go into it a lot, but there was some there. And the result of those experiment, of course. I'm not sure how far you want it to go.

Again not sure if its what you are looking for, but Flowers for Algernon is partly about science.

The Periodic Table - a collection of short stories by Primo Levi. The Royal Institution of Great Britain named it the best science book ever. Tim Radford likes it as well:

Note, Radford also mentions four anthologies that might be worth your while checking out.
