There used to be bulks of interesting posters like Gail, Atheist, Silent Mute and many more and some of them discussing a plethora of topics were really riveting and the sudden disappearance of these greats is sad and the absence of them is irreplaceable. I feel nostalgic and hope some of you too feel the same.
I am of course happy to talk to the current members equally but the missing is beyond repair.

I take it that you find intellectually stimulating topics such as Cheese Yay or Nay? Sock Length, Shoelace Tying, Double Knot: Yea or Nay? less than riveting.
But it is interesting how a question such as 'Do you like to read?' gets posted on a website devoted to literature.

Mate, I could not get the head and tail of what you have said and do not talk metaphorically since I cannot comprehend the slang of your tongue, and I want it plain and simple. I do not whether you support my argument or oppose it or disapprove of it or back this since I do not belong to the tongue with which you spew out it. Blazeofglory said he missed some people.

I'm sorry that you do not comprehend the slang of my tongue but if you were to cast an eye over the subjects raised in the General Chat section of the forum, I'm sure that the post would become more intelligible to you.

Thank you for taking lightly my miscomprehension. In fact I have yet to westernize myself your culture properly. I am poor at English and more than that colloquialism is beyond my reach. Though I have read plenty of western thought, but to immerse myself into that great stream of the western mind I have to labor hard and harder if I want to flow with tide of it. I am only on the bank watching the ripples of your thought

I read the topic you referred to and am unmoved and the topic and the posts were out of my domain of interest. I think you like that stuff and consider them intellectual. In my culture that mundane discussion cannot be classed as intellectual. Maybe our standards and values and value judgment are polar opposite

Yes Emil. We must remain lame Ivory Towerers who do not mix with the Philistines. We are all half-Philistine, no matter how sophisticated we are or become.
I can out-write and out-think most of these Ivory-Tower-mindset adhering people and I am poor trailer trash who watches lots of television.

I changed it to Bill Sykes for the 'be a villain' weekend and then decided to use something in keeping with the historical period that most interests me. The picture is of a Prussian Uhlan.
What ever happend to that Brian bean - lovely chap!
He changed his name because it seemed more in keeping with the literary nature of the forum to use the pseudonym under which he writes; which is a character in Of Human Bondage who is a German who anglicizes his name from Müller.

I miss Vonny who would just throw out the first thing that came into her mind into the mix. Virgil, of course, is greatly missed, as is Petrarch'sLove. How could you not love a beautiful blonde PhD. candidate majoring in Renaissance Literature (especially English and Italian) with a great grasp of classical music and art, and a masterful ability in putting forth her ideas and arguments in the most lucid... and diplomatic manner?

Yeah, I miss Vonny, too. Honestly, I miss anyone who sparked conversation.
Virgil is still around, though. He seems to hang around the blogs more than the forums, unfortunately. And Petrarch's Love just posted somewhere, I think the art thread. I didn't know she was a beautiful blond though. Now I must do some investigating.

There are others. It seems like every year or every few years there's a big turn around in membership. LitNet is a habit, it seems, that one can break. It's sad, though, when you've been friends, or at least used to seeing people around and suddenly they're gone, and there's nothing you can do about it. :(

Petrarch's Love, the best poster on this board by far, brilliant and friendly. Bluevictim, how often do you meet someone who's fluent in ancient Greek? Respect! Virgil doesn't get around much anymore now that he's busy with his new baby, but he was always a gentleman and a scholar. B. Laumness doesn't post nearly enough. This forum needs more smart posters from non-English speaking Europe like him. It adds dimension and variety to our perspective the way JCamilo does with his wonderful insights. Antiquarian, while we didn't always see eye to eye it is always pleasant to read the posts of a talented writer. I also wish JBI were around more too. His opinions are always fascinating, his interests are outside the norm, and he's a great debater. I'm very happy to see Morpheus Sandman recently came back. There aren't many people on the board who know movies like him.

Musicology was certainly one of Litnet's greatest characters and I suspect that he is somewhere in some distant Internet galaxy trying to convince forum members that, due to a conspiracy by music publishers, Mozart didn't write all that music .

I think most just drift away. I don't even think it's intentional. They may e get too busy to post and just never come back. I've done that with several forums (this being the longest one I've even been active on). And sometimes they'll pop up after a few years, which has happened. It also seems that when this does happen they never stick around, probably because the dynamics have completely changed. It's funny looking up threads from 2006--there's usually no currently active member that posted then, and I almost never recognize anyone. It also seems like it was a lot more lighthearted and jokey, there being a lot heavier use of emoticons (to the point of where if it was still the same, I doubt I'd be here).

"In Gabriel Oaks arms": I loved that location. I thought it was clever, literary, and a fine, fine place to be.
What happened to that p-dragon guy? He was like the most active poster when I started.
Anyway, this forum was kicked off as a fantasy forum by admin if I remember correctly. The earlier dynamic was less literary.
As for missing Quasimodo seems all but gone. Logos has disappeared, as well as many younger posters. The poetry section has dried up almost completely, and the novels discussed seem narrow to me. I feel the crowd a lot less international for some reason, and maybe this is just the summer, but I feel the homework help crowd less common.
Still, there are some good people here, and most that matter have stayed in some form.
Still I'll admit, my current reading habits are far too esoteric for these boards and I do not have the library access necessary to get books anymore. The way I did before with basically every book in the world at my disposal.
Still. Reading works that have not been out out in English that Chinese people seldom read is saddening and lonely, ANC I admit this is one of the more intellectual discussion outlets available, where people are more critical, which is good. I feel lack of criticism, and insistence on compromise and self-censorship is a disease of the mind, and this board is a relatively free place to be critical and creative.
Today I was addressed by a surly older Canadian woman for the content of my private phone call, where she basically tried to call me racist for discussing chinas penchant for plagiarism and copying out loud with a, "people here understand English, what if they get insulted". I basically called her a coward sellout with compromised values, and said the truth, never mind your eaves dropping, I at least am not afraid of the truth and expressing myself. I do not self censor.
That I guess is what makes people come back to these boards, there is a seriousness, but it is not ridiculously censored, and people feel comfortable telling each other they are full of ****. Though I will admit, I once heard one of my posts plagiarized when I was in class and a classmate gave a presentation. That once shocked me.

I wondered about this a couple of times. Would I post from my hospital bed when the time comes, and write a farewell or do my own obituary. (I'm not currently worried, but just have a morbid/amused interest).
There's always the possibility that someone could fake their own death and appear as a digital apparition after a couple of week's absence. I don't suppose it would have the same shock value as an actual haunting - though it might be disconcerting to see the expired pop up in a thread. That might depend upon the emotionality, (I made it up I think), of the departure.
Perhaps there could be an "obituary in anticipation", or an "In the event of my demise" type thread.
Or am I being too morbid?

JuniperWoolf- No, I've thought about making one. Tell someone you know irl to post here if you die or something.
In the days before LitNet and other forums I used to scour the forums related to art and literature on MSN Groups and AOL Groups, etc... One favorite group was a literature group called A Bookworm Hangout. One of the most active and most eloquent members there went simply by the name Bob. We frequently discussed and debated various books and poems, exchanged PMs from time to time... and on one occasion he even recommended me to an editor of a literary journal that was looking for contributors. It was well known that he was suffering from various serious health issues (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD) and from time to time disappeared from the site due to periods of hospitalization. During one of these stays in the hospital, he died and his wife... per her husband's dying request... posted a touching thread on the site acknowledging and thanking all the "friends" that Bob had made on the internet.
When Vonny first joined LitNet I tried to caution her about becoming too open and too personal too fast... especially as we never really know who we are dealing with on the internet. During my days on the AOL and MSN Groups I also frequented another un-moderated Literature group that could be brutal. Profanity and personal insults weren't really a problem... Those who stooped to such were censured in a way by the group as a whole. Wit, humor, knowledge, and intelligence were far more valued. A good number of the members were advanced students majoring in literature or creative writing. A number of the members were clearly "personas"... and some members had several personas that they posted under. In a way, it was a form of practice for writing and inventing characters. From this experience I learned to never take the individuals posting on the net wholly at face value...
But then... regardless of how I tried to caution Vonny... I too have come to think of any number of individuals that I have "met" on the internet... including LitNet... as "friends"... and Bob's passing was like the death of a friend... however distant.

Curiosity makes me wonder why she was banned. As a member of this Forum for eight years (and a moderator for almost that long as well), I can reassure everyone that - as Mutatis himself will be first to agree, no doubt - "no one gets a "****ty deal around here".
Everyone is given enough opportunities to comply with the Forum rules. However, bullying and trolling will never be tolerated and those who persistently break the rules are banned.

Can one have one's warnings erased after 5 years then, or will the infraction points just sit there forever?

One can gain Erasure, but first must endure a severe flogging with freshly boiled wet noodles. The Regime dont mess around.
I've had it done - it's weirdly arousing.

If it says "permanent," they stay. I know, I'm 50 in the hole. :D

Paperleaves and her poetry. I almost feel bitter about it.

Thank you Emil, Stlukes, Mutatis-Mutandi, and Max for your kind sentiments. My tender Vonny was here long enough.

Don't really keep tabs on this section of the forum, the 'General Section.' Mostly just come over here to fart sometimes. But there've been a few that routinely give great discussion, and they've made us lonesome when they've gone.
For the part of the forum that most of you don't go to, it's funny that somebody mentioned Paperleaves. She was a pleasure to read for sure.
Take or leave the rest of you hooligans... see you in the obituary thread.

The obituary thread? Where you post when you've died?

You set up your own obituary ready to auto-post when the last dregs of life have drained from your body, as it's remotely linked to your vital signs^^^^^^^^^^^^_________________________________ __________ ................................

I miss NikioliI - dude was always kind, and wrote his posts with such detail. Add to that that he often posted in the religious forums, took a beating from the forum atheists, and and nearly always kept his dignity and intellectualism about him.
I think he still occasionally posts a blog her and there, but his presence is missed here on the forums.

I would really love a flatline posted on my obituary thread, if anyone would be so kind to post it for me. Something like the following would be just lovely and highly appreciated as I lie dying:

If I'm ever gone for more than a couple months just assume I'm dead. Bear attack or car accident.
I miss Varenne Rodin. She has not completely left, but she does not post much anymore and I really enjoyed reading her posts before.

I think as the traditional academic year starts up we'll see the return of some members who haven't been posting as much in past months. I hope so, anyways. It'll be the opposite for me. I just don't have as much time now that I'm teaching and taking classes.

Darcy and Charles, I have missed you both so much! Your posts made my night. Darcy, please don't ever die in a bear attack or car accident. You are far too dear and clever.
Charles, who could stay long away from your wit and charms?
I've been a slave to my work lately. Tortured artist or something. Knowing that someone noticed my absence makes me overly happy! I'll endeavor to post more. Really, sincerely, thank you.
