I'm trying to find a piece that was posted either here, or in Short Story Sharing. My last visit to this place was January, 2011, so it's pretty old.
I only have embarrassingly vague memories of it. They might not be enough:
I believe it was about a soldier the day before he was deployed somewhere. It was set somewhere other than America, I think - maybe Africa? He spent it with a young girl that I don't think he had ever met before. It might have been raining. The last line was something like, "The next day we were shipped off to . . ."
It could have been the prologue or the beginning of a novel.
If you also remember the story, I'd really appreciate it if you could link me to it. Not being able to find it is going to drive me nuts. :smile5:
