I like love and tragedy, they are my two main themes.

I wish I were able to write a really good love poem. I hope you succeed with your story.

One book both my daughters and I enjoyed was Katherine Paterson's Bridge to Terabithia. It may be for children somewhat younger than your intended audience, but I think in incorporates well both love and tragedy for a young audience. I liked the final scene when Mrs. Myer's consoled Jesse and he finally saw her as a human being for the first time.

If you can write something as good as that, it would be a great gift.

Thanks, Jack of Hearts! Like Mutatis-Mutandis I'm curious about what Darcy88 said about Christianity, but I figure that is the topic of another thread.

I wonder if anyone else has a young adult novel they enjoyed.

My publisher, Astraea Press, focuses on YA fiction (*whispers* and is having a 99 cent sale till the end of this month).

Darcy, like you, I'm big on the complex sentences and words. This is probably because of my love for the classics and my background of teaching (albeit breifly) high school English. I sooo much want today's youth to take a stronger interest in literature and would hope that I could one day craft a story where I could use the "complex" effectively. But as my editor pointed out, it comes out as purple prose, and I lose the reader. While they don't say, "It MUST go!!", they strongly urge that I change or remove it. I actually ended up cutting about 30 pages of Harp Lessons. But, though I'm not a big Stephen King fan, I do agree with what he says about "kill your darlings."

Darcy, if you like love and tragedy, you'll probably really enjoy Blackbird Flies by Chynna Laird. I'm about 3/4 through it right now and am thoroughly enjoying it. :yesnod: The main character is a talented musician who loses his mom emotionally and physically to bipolar disorder, only to find out the girl he's attracted to is afflicted with the same condition.

I like you Darcy. :) I love your description of your Trojan princess not just because you speak so highly of her and it makes me sad that you have heartache for her, but also because you're very selfless in your description. You never mention any of her faults (I know she had some). Someone is going to be very blessed to have you one day. :yesnod:
