View Full Version : Love, Luck and Intelligence

We don’t always know
how much we love each other.
We sit across a table
from each other,
discussing the daily news,
which is awful (which is, somehow,
always awful) and we think,
without always knowing
that we think it: How lucky I am
to be with her! (Or with him.)

How much of love
is luck, and how much
is a matter of incredibly intelligent
planning? But in the case of love,
intelligence is a matter of luck, too.

Nice to see you venturing into the lists again Prince. I must say I particularly like this one, but I do have one niggle, the repetition of "each other". I'd really recommend dropping the first mention and ending the line at love. Otherwise rather pithy! Enjoyed it, thanks

The "we" makes the poem sound preachy, unless it is about a couple.

Intelligence and love contradict each other I think. If anything intelligence is an enemy of love.

There's an old saying, "Lucky at cards; unlucky in love" (and vice versa, one supposes.) It doesn't, however, account for the folks who are unlucky in both.

Whether love or luck has anything to do with intelligence, I can't say. Your observation, nonetheless, reminds me of a "meme" (that trendy new term) from an old movie:

Ingenue: Goodness, what a large diamond!
Mae West: Goodness had nothing to do with it, Dearie.

(Close the parenthesis at the end of your first stanza.

makes the whole shebang sound exclusive - and too difficult! But I still love reading your oysters of wisdom Prince.

If there's a revelation of wisdom in there, it's wasted on this young man. Don't get it. But the Prince tone and style is accounted for and that's enough to appreciate in itself.

Hmmm, Prince, making the case for fate. Thoughtful as usual, my friend.

Confused by some of the comments you got, it makes perfect sense as a thought provoking truism, put out there in style.

I will admit there is some luck involved in meeting a person who is compatible. However, once past that point, I agree with the Clint Black song, It's Something That We do.

Though luck plays a great role in case of love (or in case of any relationship for that matter), I think you still need intelligence to make it work. A good intriguing read!
