For years I've been trying to track down a short story I read in high school, but I don't know the author or title :-/
What I remember is that the narrator is somehow trapped on the wrong side when a war breaks out (vaguely remember it being a global war between northern and southern hemispheres). He is forced to hitchhike toward the border, but needs to avoid being discovered. He manages to catch a ride from an old man driving a pickup truck, and somehow the driver doesn't know there's a war...he only reads the newspaper 1 week late. The bed of the pickup truck is filled with old newspapers. The ending leaves open whether the narrator gets caught.
Thanks in advance for any leads!
