Misspoken

How such innocuous words
can render my soul,
just a casual careless statement
spoken in benign simplicity
embeds in the depths of my heart,
like a thorn, which ever burrows itself
deeper within the more I try to extract it.
How little you consider your remark,
by now already long forgotten
as insignificant, why then must
I still relive the moment
and feel it linger on?
It seeps through my pores
as a poison that was so blindly bestowed,
at times I wonder if it is your utter lack
of malevolence only makes it fester more,
it robs me of the right to anger
and reminds me of how little
you may understand after all.
