Drenched in sweat and drizzle,
We trudged this windiest city
Holding our hands and arms,
Confessing May rain stories
When you and I were kids.

You pushed the old canoe
Half-buried in the wet shore
Of sand that didn't let it go
And gave up after a gush
That bled the sea pale red.

I climbed the tip of the tree
To see the biggest sunset
Hiding among thick leaves
And I couldn't come down
because of the sudden pour.

After our stories and giggles,
We had sugared cappuccino
And we walked towards home
before you left me forever
Into the night's endless dark.

Since you left, I've been gone
Chasing drizzles and sunsets,
Looking for that buried canoe,
Imagining the stubborn shore,
Nursing the empty paper cup.

I like the way you anchor this with the half-buried canoe.
