I am the lark
caught in an updraft,
carried high above volcanoes,
flapping helplessly
my wings of ice and fire
as wild flames of life
lick the shimmering air
I am the nightingale,
gliding songless over
gleaming enamel cities,
over oceans crushing
waves on opal strands,
into hapless sunsets
of unwritten poems
I am the hummingbird,
my meadow a highway,
my flowers unstopping whirs
of metal and plastic,
my rest an airhole
that sucks me downwards,
back to nows of asphalt concrete
caught in an updraft,
carried high above volcanoes,
flapping helplessly
my wings of ice and fire
as wild flames of life
lick the shimmering air
I am the nightingale,
gliding songless over
gleaming enamel cities,
over oceans crushing
waves on opal strands,
into hapless sunsets
of unwritten poems
I am the hummingbird,
my meadow a highway,
my flowers unstopping whirs
of metal and plastic,
my rest an airhole
that sucks me downwards,
back to nows of asphalt concrete
