This is the one that interests me more than most. OK, maybe pride too, but that comes later. These things are all related.

If you are like me, you were born into this nonsense, and raised to believe things, almost all nonsense. We are grown now, we can ask questions.

Envy is the dog of society. A hungry dog. It lives on your porch. Man, it howls. The dog is tired but he keeps on humming.

You need not listen to that dog, but he howls away. He does. I swear he does.

Think you can ignore it?

Nope.

Envy runs in the field and has no concern for your ideals.

Envy's not my sin either (I'll have to wait for your "wrath" thread, I guess). I detest jealousy. I'm remarkably un-jealous in terms of the physical, which I've come to learn is uncommon. I like attractive people, who wouldn't want to look at a work of art? I'm not people-posessive either, in that "MINE MINE MINE!" sort of way, I think I'm too cocksure for it. I do have a bit of academic jealousy, and I hate that aspect of myself and force it down whenever I feel it.

Ovid personified Envy, and described her when she's visited by Athena. This closely represents how I feel about it:

Envy could be seen, eating vipers’ meat that fed her venom, and at
the sight, the goddess Athena averted her eyes. But the other got up slowly
from the ground, leaving the half-eaten snake flesh, and came
forward with sluggish steps. When she saw the goddess dressed in
her armour and her beauty, she moaned and frowned as she sighed.
Pallor spreads over her face, and all her body shrivels.

Her sight is skewed, her teeth are livid with decay, her breast is
green with bile, and her tongue is suffused with venom. She only
smiles at the sight of suffering. She never sleeps, excited by watchful
cares. She finds men’s successes disagreeable, and pines away at
the sight. She gnaws and being gnawed is also her own punishment.

Hmm, I'm a bit surprised this did not get more replies. Envy is a fact that strikes the anvil of society, or am I wrong about this? It is the hurt the mother feels when the son is not up to par. It is the mild curse of how well the neighbor is doing. I believe envy hurts us all, and affects us all, well, almost all of us, unless you are a saint, god love ya, that runs right through your blood.

It's the structure of society. There is no question for me about that.

This is why I think it is an important question.

First of all and with all due respect I would not call envy anything to do with animals but everything to do with humans.
A dog is nothing with it.
I do not know why and how envy enters people's live but so long as one is aware of it then one must get rid of it.
Like anything in life one must be in control of their feelings in order to make the best of themselves.

We envy what others have or others lives. I usually don't envy others, because generally I am satisfied with my station in live. I also have hope that things will get better and this keeps me focused on making changes for the better and achieving particular goals in my own life. This can be as simple as saving for a new piece of furniture or for a plane ticket to travel. Once accomplished, others can envy me.
