I know this is very vague, I apologize, but it's driving me nuts!!

My very foggy memory plays the story like this:
A narrated story of a semi-rebellious/lost 18-25 young man who is discussing the follies of life with an older middle-aged man. The older man tells him something vaguely along the lines of:
"Do you know what I would do if I could do it all over? I'd build myself up. ..."
He says something to express the idea that he'd create a god-like physique, and that physical beauty is the only thing in life worth working for, and that it is limited to a narrow age range.

The second quote I thought was from the same story,
"I've wasted away my life. ...but what else is there to do with a life, anyway?"

^in searching I came up with this: "Mostly I've wasted my life, I always thought I had potential, but I never did use it. More or less, I've frittered my life away. But then, what else is there to do with a life but fritter it away?" Which is by an actor from The Best Worst Movie, so perhaps I've seen it from somewhere else.

Any help is much appreciated! There's a loose bias towards Flannery O'Connor & Grace Paley, but it could be anyone.
