While I am quite familiar with many 19h century women authors from both British and American origin, when I come to think of it, I realize that I am not aware of very many from other cultures and parts of the world. I got to thinking about this while reading Resurrection by Tolstoy, which brought up a discussion on the role of women in Russian society at this time, when it had dawned upon me that I do not believe I am familiar with any Russian women authors, and when I tried to think back, I could not bring to my mind any women authors for this period of time that were not of British or American origin, but surely there must be some.

So can anyone give me any suggestions for 19th century women authors who are not British or American?

George Sand comes to my mind.

Exactly what I thought. Only one I can think of as well.

Well maybe the reason I cannot think of any is because there really are not any (or at least many) or they are just not very well known if there are some, and have not be widely published/translated.

Rosalia de Castro from Galicia in Spain (Haven't read her but she is available in translation).

De Stael from Switzerland (More 18th century, and I've not read her, she's more of a political writer).

Susanna Moodie from Canada (Not very good, her memoires are an interesting historical document).
