This is my first stab at writing so be kind, but anything you can tell me to help me I welcome it.
Green Gloomy Skies
When I walked outside the door a strange green glow filled the air accompanied by a chilling calm. You could smell a sweetness as a deep rumble in the distance shook the earth. My wife looks up with her shoulders hunched down almost uncomfortably "I don't like the look of this weather, think we should just stay home?"
She looks at me with wide serious eyes and tight lips, I remember that look from a long time ago but that's a different story. "I think it'll be fine, I don't think your parents would be happy if we blew them off anyways." She glances down at the concrete as if she was talking to it "I guess your right."
We jump in the car and head towards my parents-in-law. Everytime I look over my wife glances up towards the sky. The air is still calm but it seems it's got darker. I happen to glance up too seeing a column of dead black clouds reaching down. It is a common sight around here this time of year but it looks close and a little unusual, I blow it off and focus on the road.
I can see the large feilds of wheat and corn stalks starting to sway in the wind, the trees in the distance dancing madly. The rain begins to fall but only in waves, slowly getting heavier and heavier. I start to get the same sinking feeling my wife seems to be having. Trusting my instincts I start to slow down.
Hail starts to fall, like snow at first but every foot we travel it seems like its getting stronger. I glance up again at the sky, the column is not really a column any more. It's got swirls moving slowly around, my hands starts to shake on the wheel, I clinch and my knuckles turn white. My wife looks back down at me with the life drained out of her face.
We don't have to look up anymore, it is pretty evident. "When I stop the car you get out and run to that ditch, don't look back!" I slam on my brakes, my seatbelt tightens around me as I put my hand on the shifter. I slam the car into park not waiting for a complete stop and jump out of the car.
My wife does as I told her, and I followed right behind her. I looked over my shoulder and a mass of dust and debris starts to accumulate on the road a little ahead of us. I can see corn stalks flying around in the dust and being shot off in the distance.
When she gets to the ditch she turns around and looks at me somewhat calm for a second, I see her beautiful blue eyes switch focus and those eyes turn into the deepest fear.
"Get down!" I yell to her, she stands frozen in time looking through me.
I finially get to her which took what seems like an hour and tackle her to the ground. I lay on top of her in the dip of the ditch holding her head as close to me as possible. I could feel her slick curly hair in between my fingers while I tighten my grip. She starts to shake in my hands as a loud rumble grows louder.
My back feels the sting of the random debris stabbing like needles. I close my eyes feeling the wrath right behind me. A numbing sensation overwhelms me, seconds feel like hours and minutes pass like seconds. The roar pierces my ears, throbbing in my head, but this is the least of my worries.
Over the roar I hear a sudden screech and crash, a scream is herd in between. Glass shatters and I feel a thump in the ground. I try to resist the urge to look to protect my face but my eyes cannot help themselves. I see what looks like a black haze, a fence post fly's by and disappears in the dust; everything else is hidden.
I can feel my hands shaking my wife's head almost violently, I could hear a slight weep in the middle of all this. I whisper in her ear feeling my throat knot up "Don't worry you will be ok." Not really sure about myself, more scared of her life then my own.
I close my eyes and think of my daughter, her long curly hair like her mothers. The way she would stair at me longing for the unknown when I read her her favorite story. I remember her first day of school fear and wonder in her eyes, the look of a girl with her whole life in front of her... at least what it seemed like.
My wife has always had a sort of 6th sense about things, always knowing when something was wrong. We were just sitting in the house, she was reading a book and I was getting ready to leave for work after my daughter left for school. I looked to my wife for a kiss, her mouth got tight. "What's wrong baby?" I asked her.
"I don't know just something don't feel right... Did you see Kim get on the bus this morning" She looked at me almost hoping I didn't so she would know what this feeling was. I told her with a sense of conviction "Yeah you know I always make sure." She looked down and said "Sorry... I guess it's nothing."
Soon after that the phone rang, she quickly looked at me piercing me through my heart. I got a sinking feeling, and almost ran to the phone. Reluctant to pick it up once I got there my hand just hovered over the phone.
The bus driver had a stroke driving the kids to school, he pulled on the steering wheel and drove the bus off of a small cliff. Kim was standing at the time and flew down to the front of the bus hitting her head on the wind shield. They said she died instantly but that provides little comfort.
I suddenly snap back to reality by a startling silence. The blinding sun squinted my eyes, it feels like I was out for hours but barely a minute has passed. My wife is weeping, more prominent than before, I kiss her on the forehead and tell her "We're ok baby... we're ok." I realize my voice was cracking almost to the point of a whisper. She turns to look at me; her eyes were red, hair peppered with gravel I still feel her trembling. "I... I love you."
"I love you too..."
I stand up and put my hand out to my wife, she takes it with a dull smile. When I pull her up I also pull her into my arms and hug her, she squeezes back. I let her go and look around at the carnage and look down the road to see a car up side down. I look down farther to see a body lying there, my jaw dropped. I turn to my wife, she had her hand over her mouth, eyes wide and I tell her "Stay right here, don't move."
I jump up the small hill from the ditch and run down the street, I get a sudden burst of energy and seem to be running the fastest I have ever ran in my life. As I get closer I see blood collecting near the mans head, the sun gleaming on it peeking out of the clearing in the clouds.
I kneel beside him and touch his hand, it feels cold. I hang my head and paused for a moment mourning a man I have never met in my life. I get up now without hesitation, turn towards the car. A fence post sticking out of the shattered windshield, I rush to the door and look inside, its a little girl...
My heart sunk, I try to force my eyes to stop burning, not really a crying man but this time there is no alternative. She had the same long curly hair as Kim, she wore jeans with pink butterflies now stained red. Her hair is blondish red, probably was blonde, a streak of blood running down her forehead to her eye. Her eyes closed, still, mouth open and relaxed... this doesn't look good. I get out my pocket-knife and cut the snug seat belt away from her chest and waist. I pull her out of the car and set her down on the littered concrete.
"Come here!" I yelled to my wife waving my hands towards me. She slowly climbs up the hill and starts to walk to me. I kneel beside this little girl that is now with out a father. I put my hand on her cheek, it is still warm... thank god.
My wife walks up behind me and asks "What the hell should we do!?" I turn to her and say the only thing we can do "Call 911, get some medics here. She's still alive and I don't want to lose her... She already lost her father." She looks at me for a second water forming in her beautiful eyes.
I look back down to the little girl, all I can think of the possibilities in store for this stunning girl and the wasted life I already seen pass by. I kiss her forehead and whisper in her ear "Your going to be fine sweetie... your going to live a full life" She opens her eyes.
She gives me a blank look, like she can't process what is going on. I smile the first real smile I could get out since the day my daughter died. "Hi sweetie, how are you doing?" She gives me a confused look and forces out a few words "Wh... who are you?" I start weeping, picking her up and hugging her as if she was my own. "Don't worry about that right now honey, you just be quite. We're getting you some help."
