My only criticism of the book is its tedious preface which could easily put anyone off the whole book. My advice would be to leave it to the end or not read it at all!
This book is not only enjoyable for its historical comment but for its excellent narrative structure and the way it builds suspense. When Roger discovers the marks on the Reverend's chest I was filled with horrified excitement from the point onwards.
Do not be put off either, by the terible film version of the novel which does not translate the tension of the novel well at all. The opening chapter and careful introduction of the three main characters is one of the best I have ever read!
