View Full Version : Why there is no room for political discussion here?
I have the curiosity to know it. I am not opposing the decision of the administrator here but I often think literature and political thought have a close affiliation, and of course politics has been many a time parts and parcels of literary thought. Man himself is a political animal and of course politics has lost its image because of some political crooks –some leaders.
I am afraid whether this question is unseemly here.

I am guessing it's because politics is stale.

where there are politics there is ALWAYS drama, there will be something that gets said, taken out of context ect. and it just causes a big mess and bad blood between members. as long as I've been here there have been no political discussions allowed. I'm suprised there is still a religious section To be honest.

Politics itself is not sale and it is something that has been misused and is in the hands of the misuser or wrongdoer

Yes you are right and if members become decent and disciplined things are likely to be on track and the discussion must go coolly, abashedly without hurting anybody's sentiment and respecting each other's opinions

Yes, I believe it is what Steph says. Plus in some areas of the world, people are unable to look past one thing to the person behind it. Having been bullied for being a bible-bashing Christian (which I am not) on here by someone who is now banned or at least discouraged I think, I can imagine this can happen even more if say, the gay, abortion or race thing were debated in a political way.
So, yes, good thing that politics is banned on here. Otherwise there would be nothing but politics. Mind you, sometimes the boundary is very thin, but moderators tend to know that.

The ban is actually on current politics. A large number of religious writings can be considered literature, but I doubt any current political writing is. When it's old, maybe.

Political discussions have occurred, they're just usually closed pretty quickly.
Still, even current politics is okay for discussion if it is directly related to a book, like if we were discussing something Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert. Debate is what isn't allowed.

It seems like a bad decision to me. The people here are generally quite intellectual, and I reckon that I would learn much from a political debate or two.
I'd rather not have valuable discussion eschewed.

Intelligence is all fine and everything, but if you look at the number of closed religious threads (and some that gave in to politics) and read through them a bit, you'll see a number of highly intelligent people thoroughly embarrassing themselves.

Aren't there enough places to go on the internet to hate everyone based on their political beliefs without dragging LitNet into it?

It is simple. Politics is in the nature of people, bu many people are unaware of their intrinsic make, not only the political aspect. They reject what they are and are angry with it. People, angry with a subject, can't handle it appropriately.

I'm good with general issues that come up in often in political discussion, but I'm almost completely ignorant when it comes to the whole party-centered or group affiliation aspect of politics, mostly because politicians on tv always seem manipulative and I have trouble watching their discourse. For that reason, and for that reason alone, I wouldn't mind if we could find some way to discuss party politics so that I could watch people who know what they're talking about rail at each other for no personal gain.

I don't understand why people become so emotional when they discuss such matters. Argh, it is irritating. It is not that hard to respectful even while arguing with someone you disagree with. Well, at least for me, apparently some are not so lucky.

As a side note, I am an admin for another forum covering a completely different subject but similar to LitNet in size and format. For a while, a number of years back we allowed political discussions, but in the end we had to put a stop to it, for precisely the reasons Steph mentions. Ordinarily very sensible people bared their teeth and started brawling. As you can imagine, I fully support the policy to keep political discussions off the premises here.

Because everyone thinks they are right and no one knows what they are talking about.
You know, the same old same old.
