Greetings from Tallahassee. I am a 25 year old published poet and writer. This summer I will publish my fiction debut novel but have a problem:
Should I include the name of my ex b/f who inspired a charecter?
He is a poet as well ( a very minor one, to be sure ~sniff~).
You can visit the bastards website at: www.nelsondaniel.20megsfree.com to have a peek before you decide in this very Tennessee Williams drama. ~grin~

I should add that I am refering to my novels acknowledgment page *
Well, does HE care if you acknowledge him? Have you asked him? You called him a bastard, is that an endearment or are you really angry? Do you really *want* to add him?
It's personal, if you're going to name him as muse/ inspiration, so I don't think there are set rules here, ya gotta go with your heart. But you'll have to live with the decision once you've printed, right!?
That said, I always find it charming and sweet when an author names people in their lives who have inspired/supported them in their nasty habit of writing! ;)
Good Luck!

It's probobly not a very good idea to use his real name unless he signs a waiver not to sue. He may agree to it now but if you wright something about him that he doesn't like it could be trouble. You could be more creative and make up a name that vaguely describes his character or how you feel about him. wink

Kahll, that must have hurt! :( Sorry that happened to you.
Ok so I see where you're coming from now. So, he inspired a character, and he's told you he'd like to be credited somehow. I don't know what the legalities are regarding this, but again it seems something personal, and however you choose to handle it, it will be permanent. He can't tell you what to do, that's nonsense. But I guess there may be things that he could do to retaliate...
Personally? I can't count how many things I've written over the years that have been inspired by past lovers. I've based fiction and songs and poems etc. ad nauseum about them. The more time elapses is directly proportionate to the amount of fondness I have for these people. It hurt like hell sometimes to break up, but there was always something learned, something positive about it. So, indirectly I've `honoured' my memories of them by using some vague reference to them that only they would know. Even though crappy things happened between us as well, I feel that being negative and angry and holding grudges doesn't do me any good.
Don't know if that helps, it must be a really difficult decision to make if you're going to have your first novel published! Which is great by the way, congratulations. :D

...you have all been very helpful. I have decided to NOT include him as it's my book. He can write his own if he wants to see his name in print ha ha.
You all are the best...hope you pick up a copy of "Blown Away"...it'll be out in June or July. Just check my message board on my website....I think the admin knows lol....
All the best
James
