just to break the ice and talk about our first or lasting impressions of a fellow or fellow members here.

chose a member and dedicate an impression to them and of course they can come back and rebute it or accept it or even be impressed ..:smile5:

Most of them seem to be some of the easiest people to get along with that I've ever met. But there are some, however, and perhaps of course, though fortunately few, whom I wouldn't invite to a party if you paid me ;)

I agree that everyone I met here are pretty much cool and relaxed which I like.:smile5:

Despicable, loathsome, pig-headed people with severe self-esteem issues (papaya I'm lookin' at you here). . .in other words: interesting. ;)

But I must also address the exceptions to the above description:

Admin

Qimi

These forum members manage to be interesting with out being otherwise reprehensible. A truly amazing feat!

EDIT (note to pig-headed self) -- need to revive the insult forum game. That was good fun.

There're about five people on here I would actually like to meet person-to-person (and I will not name them), all the others I'm more than happy to converse with here. There're only a few people on here that I'd say I don't like (and I won't name them either, but I'll just say its not you, Alex, as surprising as you might find that :D).

I find the members on this board the most intelligent lot of any forum I've been to. The actual use of correct grammar (and the attempt from our non-English first language posters) alone is enough to keep my sticking around.

I'm in awe of how much a lot of the posters here know about literature. I find myself learning and reading rather then posting. I swear I learn more here about literature then I do in English class.

There are a few that I was "very frustrated" with last year. But now...

Cacian, you bring forth many thought provoking questions, and you listen well.

Darcy, you are intelligent and open-minded

Mutatis, you are bold, crass, and knuckheaded...and that is good

Juniper, you're a strong woman, "keep moving forward" (WD)

Poetic, you've always taken my breath

(for the rest, maybe I'll post again)

It's great that people here actually manage to stay with the point of the discussion (well, most of the time [nods at moderators]).

Great place to be :).

And of course there are those you skim, but that's part of it (and that does not include anyone I have had a recent argument with, an argument that will still cause waves for a long time, I have the impression :D).

I love coming here and read all the different comments on different subjects, even though I tend to stick to the simpler stuff, I really enjoy reading all arguments and odd comments. No one I dislike (at the moment) but many I really like.

This is a thread that could go badly wrong, but...

Without name dropping, there are quite a large number of people on here I esteem highly. There are a few prats too, but we won't mention them.

The trouble with this thread is that every time someone says something like "there're about five people here I'd like to meet" or "there are some I don't like," some members are going to be wondering who, make assumptions, etc. Of course, naming names is even worse.

Unfortunately this is a paradoxical thread, where it would be unsatisfactory to offer a satisfactory response....so general sentiments and vague descriptions must ensue.

But.....allow me to present the "RANDOM CHARLES DARNAY AWARDS BASED ON WHO CAN THINK OF AT THE TOP OF MY HEAD (WITH FULL DISCLOSURE THAT THERE ARE MANY MORE AWESOME PEOPLE THAN WHO WILL BE MENTIONED) - ah the coveted RCDABOWCTOATTOMHWFDTTAMMAPTWWBM awards!

I hadn't been on any forums before this one, and I find the whole internet impression quite interesting, divorced as it is from physical prescence, charisma, how a person comes across, how abrasive or gentle they are etc.

I find my own impressions of people formed from their stated opinions, what they reveal about themselves, their described situation, their avatar, how they respond - positively/ negatively/ conciliatorily/ and - like anyone you might meet in the flesh -you build up a picture of them based upon this over time.

The internet does give a person the opportunity to reflect a bit more, and to perhaps respond more successfully than we actually might in real life. There are always times when we might bite, but it seems over time you can develop a fondness for people and want to engage them in conversation. It's really quite nice.

There are lots of Litnetters who seem really interesting and who I think would be just as intersting to meet in the flesh. Of course, living busy and full lives, (not sitting alone at home in the small hours posting to strangers), the advantage of this forum is that we don't have to even if we could, and there is a certain security in not having to, but being content to chat over the digital garden fence when we want to.

It's been really illuminating to talk to people from different countries and cultures, and what comes over is how generally reasonable most of us are. Perhaps we're a small global lit-geek minority, but it's nice to know that there are people who share your own likes and views, and that you can have a hearty ding-dong with if you want to.

I wouldn't have any problem meeting any of you - I'd carefully choose a public place in daylight with two exits whilst carrying a small concealed weapon. No worries.

That's such a positive view, Darcy.

My impression is, normal and intelligent people. . . all with access to a computer.

I'm not sure - I love everyone. I don't understand some of the things that have happened; but I tend to follow the school that says, “The past has no power over the present moment,” (Eckhart Tolle) but I don't really know how to share this feeling. The closer I am to understanding that everything is new, the happier I am, I think it's one of the keys to life.

How many people quickly scanned ahead to see if their names were on the "List of Nominees"?

I must like everyone here, simply because I hang out here all the time. The thread has made me reflect. Sometimes I am a bit more truculent (than I want to be) here than in physical form- where I am quite a chilled out dude.

But, Damn, I am glad I found this forum. It's cathartic and I get a certain buzz just signing on every day. If Onlit was a bar, it would be cool as hell (not just the drinks). We could stroll in, unwind, and chat, have a few...yea, I'd like that.

However, I've learned more here about literature and found out about more authors than anywhere else in my life. I'm actually very thankful for stumbling onto this place.

I think this forum lends itself to great engagement and discussion and you do not have to be so removed. This may be in large part to the relatively small number of trolls or completely ridiculous posts that make you think, "I have no desire to interact with any of you."

I really like this forum because there's just so much knowledge floating around here, and just by reading the threads I pick up a lot. Not only about literature itself but about historical backgrounds, general discussions, religion etc. And the thing that's always bothered me on other forums was the language used. Everyone here seems quite sophisticated in their way of expressing themselves and the amount of mistakes is kept to a minimum. Even by non-native speakers/writers.

Most of the linetters are nice and polite, some are funny and witty, few are serious and stern but this is what makes it a good forum. As far as my Litnet friends are concerned I’m going to say they are the best. Poetic, you've always taken my breath

(for the rest, maybe I'll post again)

Well gosh...

But wait, the question is, was I also one of the ones that frustrated you last year??

I don't post on here as much as I'd like... I often have very big and strong opinions, but for some reason I tend not to promote them (or I write a lot less than I would actually want)... So I often wonder what the virtual world of litnetters might think about me...

As for all of you... there are definitely some of you that I find quite obnoxious and tedious (a few self-righteous members for sure... and some that definitely have a lot of insecurities and because of that come off really arrogant)... but there are more of you that I admire and find to be extremely intelligent, witty, and quite fun all around... There are a handful or more that I would definitely like to meet!

I'd like to only give awards to a few members for a few things right now, til I think of more:
Best poetry: Hawkman, Delta, Prince Myshkin, Silas Thorne
Best overall knowledge of history and literature: JBI
Best person to play forum games with: tonywalt
Funniest: The Comedian ha...
Ones I'd like to have a drink with: pretty much all of you who post regularly in the Blokes thread... :D
One I'd like to corrupt: Bien haha ;)

I like all the ongoing members here. They each have a special contribution to make. I wouldn't like to hand out awards for specific categories but I would like to mention a few.

Hawkman and Auntie for their wonderful critquing skills. Their devotion deserves some sort of Gold member status....
All the poets who post on Lit-Net who can take criticism with grace.

I enjoy reading the serious discussion threads even when it does go downhill. I'd like to make a special mention here to Juniper Woolf (Her feisty spirit is absolutely admirable in my view) Alexander III for his skill in keeping a discussion going and Mutatis Mutandis for his open mindedness during a discussion. Also OrphanPips & StLukesguilds marvellous resource of information and world knowledge.

There are other members of course and I think they're great too but there are so many to mention. Over the years, this site has become like a second family to me!

Whatever gave you that idea? I'd be better off in your favorites list though. But I don't have any grudge against you Varenne. It's tough to read minds online. For instance, I'm sure there are a few who don't like me. Basically I stand up for myself. Though I've been warned by the mods in regards to religion.

You know when you're going to a place you've never visited before -before you become jaded and cynical with a just - in - case - it's - crap attitude -(or is that just me?), and when you get there it's completely different to what you imagined and expected?

I wonder if that would happen if Litnetters met? You'd have the internet personality - or an impression of that with you, and then the physical/ personality impression you'd get on a meet. I wonder if it would be eay to square the two, or whether you'd have the lingering impression of a different person?

I had an opportunity to meet one of the Lit-Netters while I was in the UK but my timing was out so it didn't happen but I think you make a valid point Paul. We do get a sense of an internet personality and build up a virtual character in our minds. Rather like when you read a book then see the series or movie character really. But I expect if the friendship has been going long enough, we adjust accordingly.

Mr. Darcy is a good debater too, and intelligent writer (I'm thinking of a particular thread I don't want to mention but he knows) and just nice.

You have to love Europe

Elizabeth Montagu (2 October 1718 – 25 August 1800) was a British social reformer, patron of the arts, salonist, literary critic, and writer who helped organize and lead the bluestocking society.

I would love to just be a salonist and spend my days nurturing arts and literature and stuff like that.

I pull out the big guns of American Intelligentsia and quote below:

"Life is hard. It's even harder when your stupid" John Wayne

Emil should have been on more lists, he is published and quite a good read! I read it recently.

I'm generally the same: just a bit shorter.

Haha, my in-person self is small too. I can describe what I've been told my irl personna is like. I've been told hundreds of times, ever since I was old enough to talk, that while I do laugh and joke almost constantly, I do nothing to inhibit my anger. When I get mad, I apparently closely resemble an angry kitten which is funny to everyone who isn't me. My freind Steve thinks it's hilarious to call me "palmtop tiger" whenever I'm raging about something, and my boyfriend just rolls me in blankets and sits on me, and then I squirm ineffectually until I get tired. *sigh* One day, I'll be bigger than EVERYONE! You'll see! You'll all see!

Oh yeah, also, people who are talking to me about something generally find me attentive. I pay attention well.

This reminds me of a line from one of Len Deighton's Bernard Samson novels. Samson-as-narrator says that while most people think that small people are aggressive because they're small, he thinks that aggressive people are made small to keep them from taking over the world.

I'm not at all the way portray myself. Irl, I'm pretty shy and quiet. I'm definitely not quick to anger like I am on here. I actually avoid arguments. Really, I'm not much like I am here at all . . . but that's partly why I come here, to not be myself. I say things here that I'd like to say irl and usually don't. Of course, that's a good thing, as my infraction points show that I'd be getting in a lot of trouble if I was as verbose as I am here.

The confrontivensas and outgoing personality is all that's fake about me on the boards, though. My sense of humor is the same--I love immature humor. If I know people well enough, I will definitely make sarcastic comments (if someone doesn't know me and my sense of humor, my jokes generally just get weird looks--I've seen it many a time on my classmates' faces). I like all the same music, art, and books I say I do. I just wanted to distinguish between what I do fake and what I don't.

For one reason or another I like most members, though I feel more attached to those with whom I've had some sort of closer contact, like the few with whom I've spoken about personal matters and have exchanged encouragement with through hard times. Also the people one talks to on a regular basis about just anything, because there seems to be an easiness for communication between both parts of the line.
For some magical obvious reason I like those who like me, but I don't think I'm liked by so many, which is normal for some karmas.

I like everyone, even the people I don't get along with. StLukes and JBI are walking encyclopedias of literature. If you ever find yourself in a debate with either, quickly concede and save yourself the intellectual beat-down. Favorite poet would be Paperleaves (wherever she is) and firefangled. Hawkman and blank|verse (wherever he is) are our best critics. I always love finding myself chatting with Alexander on any subject. Mutatis is a great guy. Biggus is always so good-natured. Delta is sweet, and incredibly talented.

This is a great all-around forum--definitely one of the best I've ever been a part of. What I love is that almost everyone is capable of holding in-depth discussions and debates without getting hostile. Yeah, there are exceptions when things get heated, but I have learned so much on here from people that have a seemingly unlimited experience with literature. So a big :cheers2: to everyone.

I miss The Atheist. And hillwalker, though I have it on good authority he's still lurking.

I wonder what happened to The Atheist.

I'm thinking he just moved on, or got sick of these forums, like so many others.

As much as some members complain about the current atheists on this forum, we're lightweights compared to him. He was militant.

Speaking of the lost ones (or perhaps they are just invisibly lurking around sadistically enjoying being missed by us all), there are so many old regulars missing on the forums!
Niamh, Nightshade, Annamariah, Virgil, AimusSage, Dori, Taliesin, AimusSage, chava, kilted, mono and the list goes on. You people need to post! :D

Honest and unprejudiced especially Janine, Gilliatt, Pensy, Qimi, two old blokes Virgil and Claes and new addition Sophia21.
A pleasure to have made such a fine impression on Your Highness! :p
You and Claes have to be two of the best photographers I have come across on the photography thread, seriously.

The greatest avatar: must be Pensive (I have tried to rob it twice and it doesn't work
my little birdy would have liked company of kiki's little birdy too, if only the forum software allowed 'living' anymore! :D

I almost miss the late great GL Wilson. He made an appearance in march with about 6 postings then disappeared back into the darkness.

I think he was rebanned for no apparent reason, sort of like when Vonny came back and made one post saying "Bonjour," and, bam! she's banned.

Oh great, I never thought I'd find myself mentioned here :D I've still been reading the forums occasionally, but it's been quite long since I last logged in. There are a few people from here who I've been in touch with otherwise, but only a few, and I've missed many others while I've been gone. So, nice to see you again!
