View Full Version : Where would you end up if you dug a hole straight through the center of the earth?

Find your location in the top map, the bottom map shows where you'll come out. Mine was dull, I'm in the middle of the Indian Ocean, almost right between Madagascar and Antarctica. It'd be cool if someone's house was directly on the opposite side of the earth to my house, but I guess that is pretty unlikely considering how much landspace is taken up by houses.

With so much of the Earth's surface being water, how many places are there where land is opposite land?

Ocean for me, too. I always suspected that "if you dug a hole deep enough you'd end up in China" stuff was BS.

In the sea, south of New Zealand. Hmm.

Well, I'm guessing some people in North America can end up in Australia, and some people in Asia can end up in South America.

I was always told I would be in China, and I remember as a little kid trying to dig there
But I am in the ocean not far from Perth, Australia! I would love to go there.

Sadly, apparently not. Here are links to two antipodal maps, courtesy of Wikipedia.

Apparently the dark orange bits are the places where land is opposite land.

My brother and I did also when we were too young to know better. We reached water at about 2 feet and had to stop.

I'm in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Australia. I was really hoping to hit a land mass.

How dissapointing, practically no one is opposite a landmass outside of South America and Asia. Add that whole China thing to the long list of "lies your parents told you."

Knowing my luck, probably right in front of my ex-wife's laundry basket.

I would end up in the ocean close to Antarctica

I'm sort of between Madagascar and Australia. Closer to Madagascar. Australia never seemed so far away.

Yup, middle of the ocean, same place as Varenne.

I'm not even close to anything... just a vast expanse of blue... somewhere in the south Pacific Ocean... I see no land anywhere nearby... guess New Zealand is closest... just a couple of thousand of miles away.

Oh, my goodness! I found Waldo! Oops! Nevermind... I'm in the Indian Ocean...I'm close to Madagascar though. Just a few weeks of swimming and I should be there.
