If the sky is clear wherever you find yourself tonight, take a moment to step out and gaze at the moon. Tonight's full moon coincides with it's perigee to Earth creating a larger visual appearance and brightness.

I suggest playing this as it breaks the horizon:

Looks like the fat f&^#er went super nova.
Interesting shot. Good to see you took the moment to admire it.

That's great that you were able to see it.

We had a supermoon party at my brother in law's with their 8 year old twins. I grabbed the telescope and the camera. The kids enjoyed looking through the telescope.
Here's a few pics from last night...

After some high thin clouds moved in:

Beautiful pics, guys. I went for a walk after dark, and I'm so glad I did. There it was, shining, juicy, golden, and just ripe for picking. For image, see above.

We saw it last night and apparently it was 14% bigger than at any other time or something. Bright silver and I could actually see its face for the first time - everybody tells me the moon has one but I don't see one but I did last night!

Great shots Gilliatt.

I took some too, but I had my auto setting on the wrong setting for most of them - just checking now if any are worth posting (don't hold your breath... ;) )

Thick cloud yesterday, but it's still quite impressive tonight

I also was watching it last night. It was gorgeous. Thanks for the pictures.

It's great to see the turn out.
Tonight should be just as spectacular assuming it is clear as evidenced by Wifflingpin. The moon will be slightly less than full, but good enough for government work.

Mystery - Hopefully you can salvage something out of your efforts. I was limited to a 200mm Albinar lens circa 1970's, with a mount that fits my Pentax, therefore it was trial and error exercise using manual settings.

My shots were taken roughly within the first hour after it broke the horizon, hence the orange hue created by the layers of atmospheric funk.

Wifflingpin - Wow! That is amazing.
Do you mind sharing yopur means and methods for that shot?
The crater; "Tycho" is quite clear in your photo.

There is a thread buried somewhere in the past by Dark Muse that would be appropriate for the occasion. It is titled "Ode to the Moon".

Silver by Walter de la Mare

Slowly, silently, now the moon
Walks the night in her silver shoon;
This way, and that, she peers, and sees
Silver fruit upon silver trees;
One by one the casements catch
Her beams beneath the silvery thatch;
Couched in his kennel, like a log,
With paws of silver sleeps the dog;
From their shadowy cote the white breasts peep
Of doves in a silver-feathered sleep;
A harvest mouse goes scampering by,
With silver claws, and silver eye;
And moveless fish in the water gleam,
By silver reeds in a silver stream.

Beautiful pictures. Stunning moon. How strange we are sitting on this ball with only one other ball nearby. How lonely and weird. We're very fortunate I think, to have a moon.

I was at a firepit with a bunch of drunk people last night and they were all complaining about how dissapointed they were. Apparently, a super moon should be more "super." I thought it was really bright, but I couldn't tell that it was significantly bigger. The moon always looks smaller in my town though, we don't get that whole phenomenon where it looks bigger near the horizon since we have mountains instead of a horizon.

"Do you mind sharing your means and methods for that shot?"

Huh - I pointed the camera, and pressed a button thingy -quite a few times. Most of the pictures were completely rubbish.

The camera was an Olympus SP550UZ, (18x zoom) with an extra lens thing (1.7x) - certainly not the kit for serious photographers (Oh, don't tell Olympus I said that!) The setting was one that said it was good for fireworks. I rested the lens attachment on the window frame.

I didn't see it as bigger either, but definitely brighter.. I didn't know there was supposed to be anything special, but the night before the full moon, and on the full moon, I was noticing the moon more. It drew my attention but I didn't consciously think about it.

Super Moon 2013

Looks like we have another "super moon" occurence tonight (Sunday 23rd).
This will be the closest perigee full moon of 2013.

Last night I saw the white disk right above my head, but tonight it looks indeed bigger. Last night there was a halo, if that is the correct technical name for what I saw, surrounding it at some distance, not really close to the moon but quite away from it. Pity I lack a good camera.

I hopped on the scale last night hoping that the maximized gravitational pull from the supermoon would tug me lighter, but it didn't seem to help much.

Nice to know we have some lunatics out there. The moonrise was amazing.
Tonight will still be nearly as amazing.

Sorry for the confusion, I was trying to save the Earth by recycling my super moon thread from last year.
Glad you got out to take a look.
