I think that the novel was great, and I decided to read it on my own. I don't think the underlining matter of the book was about romance, but about the need to be open with sin and forgiving. Hawthorne shows this through Hester, she knows the sins that she has commited and does not hide away from them , although her life seems sad she is the only one that has peace. In the end of the novel it is the same sign that was meant to be a symbol of sin and was then looked at with reverence.
