A Techno Fable

The world has gone
dark at this cafe
where people meet
to meet, shrouded
in light.

The personal
computers, resting
idly beside their owners,
beam at them
wanting for attention.

Yet, the people
continue their yapping.
But computers are
perceptive, and know
a thing or two
about communication.
Quickly they grow
weary of this display.

They collectively decide
to device a plan.
"Hey you! Up there!"
they call to the bulbs
hanging from the ceiling.

"No use getting
your filaments heated
over this.
Let's show them".

The bulbs agree,
knowing their
incandescence
has been put
to bad use,
and pop themselves.

"A fuse has blown.
Power will return
shortly", the waiter calls out.

It is now real
obscurity, save
for the halos shed
by the truthful screens
on their owners,
marking the darkness
between the yapping people
talking to themselves.

Suddenly embarrassed,
the people return to pet
their computers who calm
under their owners'
soft caresses.

"It is true,
what they say",
the computers think,
"we truly are
man's best friend".
