Go fishin'

It rains

I don't mean the gentle
patter or damn pitter
on a tin roof

Not even the kind you can
still drive in safely
if sliding a bit

Nor the sort that rolls
along the kurb to
a storm drain


Closer to the number they
call a Biblical flood
this one

Isn't like sheets or even
blankets but thick
wet doonas

The ground is drenched
with nowhere for the
water to go

So deep I could be in
the middle of the
lake because

Soon I can't see where
the lake begins or
ends

Ankledeep becomes kneedeep
goes on to thighdeep
then waistdeep

I find a tree and climb it
to the second branch
and wait


All night as it happens
until daybreak
finally


Still haven't found my rods
