I believe Dimmesdale's name had something to do with the area in the forest where he met with Hester and its being dim and gloomy.
I'm just responding to your question about their names and the meaning behind them. Hester Prinne (spelling correct?), actually her last name rhymes with sin because after all the scarlet letter has become her identity. Arthur Dimmesdale as in not "bright" dim either because he held a dark secret or wasn't too smart on how to resolve his guilt; and dale means lowland valley, you can fill in the blanks for that one. As for Pearl, in the book Hester reveals that she named her child that because she gave up her former life of nobility and anonymity, a life she valued so greatly once Pearl was conceived. And Chillingsworth is cleverly or deviantly named this because he has become the devil reincarnation for the other characters; he can send "chills" down your spine.
Since this is a late response, I hope you still find it useful.

bye, X
The book was a great book, it told about how Hester was not afraid and how she was strong through the whole process. She never gave up and she helped poeple. The only thing that I don't get, are the names, and i have looked every where to figure out what they mean but i can't. oh well i will jusy keep looking
