This was not written in the "Puritan times." It was written in the 19th cent. ABOUT the "Puritan times." To say you fully understand it is more than any scholar could even say.

This book was mediocre. I just finished reading it during my freshman year in high school. And I am 14 years old and I completely understand this book. I do think that this is a classic even though it can be boring at times. But, what you must think is what makes a book a classic; it depends on the author. Nathaniel Hawthorne is a great story teller because somehow he gets his views out to the world, one way or another. He wrote this book during the Puritan times. It was very hard for people to say what they think during those days. But, today's literature is easier for people to understand. If you criticize this book I suggest you first read it completely and do a little research on Nathaniel Hawthorne. After you have done that CRITICIZE AWAY!
