I never took into account of how I would die. Some would say that I almost needed the fear of death to hold my attention, because I never thought it would catch me. I also never imagined that it would end with the love of my life trying to stake me. One reason I never thought he would ever do this was because I saved his soul. Or so I thought. Now as I look into his eyes I don’t see the man I loved, I see a shell of a man. As he raises the stake to deliver the final blow, I try to plead with my eyes but it all happens in slow motion. As the stake comes down I flash back over my life and see our daughter, Gaia, smiling, I see my wedding day with Brandon at the alter, I see the day he proposed and finally I see the day that I released his demon. Then its all over.
1 Day earlier….
I sit on the terrace of my bedroom drinking some tea and thinking of everything that has occurred in the last 40 odd years, when Brandon walks out to join me. “Good morning Rose, how are you fairing?”. He asked while preparing a cup of tea for himself. “I’m surprisingly well, even though I was up preparing your valentines day gift”. I say with a smirk that turns into a full blown smile at the look of curiosity on his face. “And what might this wonderful gift that you had to stay up completing be?”. He says with a grin. I continue to smile and say, “Oh wouldn’t you like to know”. That’s when I see it, the flash of red that I thought I killed. His eyes shift so fast that they barely catch the red but I know I saw it. “Well Rose, I look forward to seeing this gift”. He says as he gets up to dress for the day.
As he dresses, I sit for a little bit longer to think over everything. Though its been 40 years we still look 21, so immortality has its perks. When I went on the solo mission to save Brandon’s soul, I didn’t know if my heart could bear it. In the end I accomplished saving him and soon after, we were married and I soon gave birth to a girl named Gaia. Life was moving along smoothly with Brandon training dhampires and me running a sanctuary for others in need. Though, recently I’ve been noticing a change within Brandon. I stand up, having finished my tea, and look over the grounds and spot Gaia chasing a butterfly.
When I walk back into our room I spot Brandon walking out of the closet in his usual black Armani suit attire staring at his reflection as hes drifted off somewhere. “Are you alright”. I ask concerned. He blinks a few times then smiles at me. “I’m okay Rose. What are your plans for today?”. I walk into my closet to find an outfit for the day. “Um? I’m heading down to the council then I have the rest of the day to myself. Why?”. I say while I dress in a flowing green blouse, black pencil skirt, and black high heels. “Oh, I wanted to have a nice dinner that’s all”. He says. “I’d love to”. I say as I walk out of the closet dressed. He nods and walks over and kisses me before leaving.
As I stroll down to the gardens I cant help but think about his strange behavior. Before I can even think on it more Gaia runs up to me beaming, and her cerulean eyes twinkling. “Mummy, mummy!”. She yells. I open my arms for her to jump into and say, “How is my little buttercup this morning”. “Mummy, I caught a butterfly”. She says excitedly. “That’s great Gaia, why don’t you show me before I have to leave for council”. I tell her. I then put her down and she begins tugging me towards the garden.
Later that evening….
I sigh with exhaustion when I finally get home. Council took longer than expected, so I head straight for Gaia's room to kiss her good night then I walk to the kitchen to grab a wine glass and fill it with a little red before I go up to deal with Brandon. As I walk up the stair case I see roses that line the hallway and as I reach our bedroom i see him with his back to me on the terrace. He growls and says, “Where have you been Rose? I believe we had dinner plans”. I sigh and say, “Council took longer than expected. I’m sorry, this is lovely by the way”. He then turns and stalks up to me pushing me against the wall. I look at him and say, “Jealousy, really?, for whom?”. “Do not test me Rose, you were supposed to be back here hours ago and you expect me to believe council took that long? I am no fool!”. He screams at me.
What happens next is both shocking and painful. He sinks his fangs into my neck without my consent. Once he finishes I slump to the floor in tears. “Don’t lie to me again Rose”. He says as he stands up and wipes his hand across his mouth. That’s when I knew his demon had returned. As I sat there and cried he commanded me to clean up and join him for be. When I emerged from the bathroom he sat there waiting for me. “I’m sorry Rose, please forgive me?”. He pleads. “Brandon, I just want to sleep, so if you would be so kind as to leave me alone!”. I scream and walk into my closet.
Next morning….
My neck is sore when I wake up but the marks are gone. I get out of the bed without a word and get dressed in a black suit jacket, skirt, red silk shirt, and black heels. I can feel him watching me but he doesn’t speak. As I walk to the vanity he finally speaks, “You look lovely”. I stay silent and so does he. I then rise and walk down the hallways to Gaia’s room to kiss her good morning and say, “Gaia, Mummy is going out for a little bit. Do you think you can behave till I return?”. She giggles and says, “I’m your good girl, I’ll be good!”. “Okay, I love you”. I tell her as I walk out of her room.
As I walk into the garage he’s standing next to my Mercedes. “Rose, can I talk to you? I’m sorry”. He says. I walk past him and take the Lexis car keys off the wall and I hit the garage door button. “I need to think so I’ll be out shopping or doing what ever it is that you though I was doing yesterday”. I say sarcastically. I hop in the car and take off.
Later that evening….
As I got out of the car and took my bags out of the trunk I start to walk into the foyer. Its then I get the feeling that something is off. Walk into the library and see Gaia asleep o
n one of the couches. So I walk up the stairs to find Brandon and I don’t have to look far because hes in my study. Wait? Why is he in my study?. I ask myself. “Brandon”. I ask. “Rose, why don’t you join me for some wine and conversation?”. He asks with a smile. “Why don’t you stop playing these games. What is is that you want?”. I ask bitterly. “Actually that’s a great idea, to cease with the games”. He then walks toward me and hugs me, I barely feel the syringe in my neck until I start to lose my balance.
Once he catches me he lies me on the ground and pulls out a silver stake. My eyes go wide and I try to speak but I cant. He laughs and then says, “I’m a jealous man and if you cant stay with me and Gaia no one can have you, so I’m sorry but this has to be the end for us. Don’t worry Gaia will know how wonderful her mother was and so will the rest you care for”. It’s then he raises the stake and my life flashes. Then its all over.
